Socialising Tomorrow’s Cities: A Concept and Practice
Dilli Prasad Poudel, Senior Researcher, Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS)

Abstract:
In this talk, the speaker will share findings from a 5-years multinational and multidisciplinary futuristic research project called “Tomorrow’s Cities”, which was funded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). Considering equity and risk resilience, the project aimed to reduce the risk for the poor in the cities that are yet to be planned. In five years (2019-2024), more than 200 TC researchers from more than 50 institutions not only learned from Khokana (Nepal), Quito (Ecuador), Istanbul (Turkey) and Nairobi (Kenya) cases, which were called “learning cities”, but also designed a tool which is called Tomorrow’s Cities Decision Support Environment (TCDSE) and implemented it in Rapti/DeuKhuri (Nepal), Nablus (Palestine), Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania) and Chattogram & Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh). These cities are called “implementing cities”. TCDSE helps authorities and urban planners design risk-resilient and equitable future cities. It comprises five Work Packages: Future Visioning, Future Scenarios, Computational Modelling and Computed Impact Metrics, Risk Agreement, and Visioning Scenario Assessment.

Broadly, the presentation will be divided into two parts. First, the speaker will introduce “Tomorrow’s Cities” as a Project, Concept and Practice. Second, he will share the experiences from two case sites from Nepal i.e. Khokana (Lalitpur) and Rapti/Deukhuri (Lumbini province).
