Abstract:
Despite China’s century of establishing academic discipline in the field of Southasian studies, the field has been described as a “cold study” in Chinese academia highlighting the lack of discipline in this field. While country-specific research centers of Nepal, Pakistan etc. have opened up in China in recent years, existing Southasia as a discipline in China remains largely focused on the study of India. This discussion will shed light on how politics and cultural exchanges have shaped Southasia studies in China, retrospect and prospects of country-specific research centers, and current trends in Southasian studies in China.
