Notes on Nepal and Himalayan Area Studies in Contemporary Japan
Tatsuro Fujikura, Professor, Department of South Asian and Indian Ocean Studies, Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, Kyoto University

Abstract:
In this presentation, I try to identify some characteristic features of Nepal and Himalayan studies in Japan, mainly based on my experience, first being trained in anthropology and South Asian studies at an US graduate school, and since 2005,  teaching at an area studies graduate school at Kyoto University, and advising students. After a brief overview of the history of area studies in Japan, I look at recent trends in research topics, funding, language training, etc.
