Disability and Educational, Labor Market, and Marital Outcomes in Nepal
Yubraj Acharya, PhD
Associate Professor of Health Policy and Administration, Pennsylvania State University
Abstract:
There is limited evidence from low-income countries on the multifaceted effects of disability on an individual's wellbeing. We will present evidence from two recent studies, both from Nepal, that examine how the lack of disability-inclusive policies affect educational, labor market, and marital outcomes. In one study, we compare outcomes for siblings living in the same household. In another, we examine how parental disability affects the outcomes for children. The overall objectives are to document the wide-ranging disadvantages that individuals with disability face and to trigger discussion on social protection measures, including the disability allowance currently in place.
